Here are some ideas you can use to help control your usage.

1. Try to keep thermostats for the furnace and water heater at a lower setting.

2. Be sure that your humidifier is cleaned and working properly because a higher humidity level allows you to be comfortable at a lower setting.

3. Clean furnace filters monthly and have the furnace inspected to ensure efficient operations.

4. Use weather stripping around doors and windows and make sure ductwork isn't leaking and is insulated in unconditioned areas.

5. The attic should have R-19 insulation or better to prevent heat loss.

6. If you furnace is older than 10 years consider upgrading to a higher efficiency furnace.

7. Fireplaces should have the doors and damper closed when not in use.

8. Keep heat registers and cold air returns clean and clear of furniture and draperies.
